In New York, the durag was never just a cloth. It lived in the culture. Barbershops, brush sessions, braids, waves, and the everyday work of keeping hair protected.

As hip-hop grew in the Bronx and spread across the five boroughs, the durag went with it. By the late ’90s and early 2000s, Jay-Z, Cam’ron, 50 Cent, and Ja Rule had it in the videos, album covers, stages, and streets. What started as maintenance became identity, something worn with pride, attitude, and intention.

They judged, banned, and misunderstood the Durag. But New York never needed permission to understand it. Here, it has always meant style, confidence, and culture.
